2019 marked the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements and was proclaimed the “International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT2019)” by the United Nations General Assembly and UNESCO.

IYPT2019 Symposium at UNSW was organised by Simin Maleknia with thanks to "The Howard Lectures" funds supporting the visit of Prof. Richard Schrock, and the generous support of Invicro, FB Rice, UNSW Chemical Society, and UNSW School of Chemical Engineering.

The Symposium was opened by Dr Simin Maleknia with a historical brief about Dmitri Mendeleev, and a summary on her multidisciplinary research, which she originated and initiated at UNSW during 2016-2017, on "Elemental profiling of wildlife to combat illegal trafficking", "eNose sensors based on her odour profiling work with applications in environmental, medicine, and wildlife conservation", "Water based filters for air purification" that incorporate the use of algae

Invited presentations spanning the period table included:

Professor Richard Schrock, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, presenting on “Tantalizing discoveries in 1974 and their consequences”

Dr James Kronauge, Tomopath Inc., Co-founder and President on “The pivotal role of metals in molecular medicine and imaging”

Professor Justin Gooding, UNSW Sydney, presenting on “How noble metals are taking us towards quantitative sensors by monitoring many single molecules”

A/Professor Anthony Dosseto, University of Wollongong, presenting on “Naturally occurring metal stable isotopes as innovative diagnostic tools of human diseases"

Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh, UNSW Sydney, presenting on "Catalytic marvels of liquid metals"
